2022 Virely Rougeot Bourgogne Pinot Noir
“Holy Cow! What is this?” was my reaction to an importer who made a special trip to Ojai just to introduce this wine to me. This guy knows the kind of wines I buy, and rarely misses, so I knew I was in for something special.
Sure enough, Domaine Virely-Rougeot Bourgogne has all the ripeness and concentration characteristic of the 2022 vintage in Burgundy (an excellent vintage as most of you know). It is pure, concentrated, red fruit leaning with ample density, spice, complexity, structure and with a balanced, nuanced finish. It reminds me of 1er cru more than a Bougogne. This wine is tremendous in every way!
I’m all in!! I bought everything the importer would sell and would have taken another 50cs, if available. At $29, there isn’t a better Pinot Noir on the market - from anywhere in the world, let alone Burgundy! Buy more than you think, because when you get around to ordering again, it may be long gone. I suspect this one will zoom out the doors!
Virely-Rougeot will be included in my hall of fame for red wine values. Buy this one with confidence and with the idea that it will likely zoom out our doors and not be available once you’re circling back.
