2022 Domaine Joseph Drouhin
“Based on what I tasted, I would wholeheartedly agree with me. Drouhin's sentiments as there are some excellent wines in the portfolio in 2022”
If I could go back in time, I would buy more Domaine Joseph Drouhin ! Recently, in blind tastings there have been many times we reveal the favorite wine and it's Joseph Drouhin capturing the top spot. I’ve got guys I’ve been drinking with for 25+ years, and we shake our heads every time - why were we not buying more of these wines?
The track record and the ability for these wines to age is absolutely undeniable. I’ve cherry picked a few of my “must have” wines here in 2022.
A deft application of wood frames the overtly floral-suffused nose of petrol, white peach, lemon zest and subtle spice wisps. The medium-bodied flavors are also rich to the point of opulence, yet the firm acid spine saves the balance on the saliva-inducing, long and powerful finish. This fine effort is very Morgeot in character and worth a look.
- Burghound, 91-93 Outstanding!
Aromas of honeyed orchard fruits, buttery pastry, peaches, toasted nuts and spices introduce the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Marquis de Laguiche, a medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny wine that's rich, glossy and unctuous, with all the fat and texture typical of this bottling.
- William Kelley, 92-94
Smoky notes of mineral reduction add breadth to the cool and airy nose of mildly exotic white peach, citrus confit and a plenitude of floral wisps that are trimmed in discreet oak influence. The refined medium weight flavors possess good if not genuinely special density but with a positively gorgeous texture that carries over to the stony bitter lemon zest finale that possesses stunningly good length and terrific complexity. This is very classy and a wine that I suspect will add weight with bottle aging.
- Burghound, 93-96 Don’t Miss!
2022 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Beaune Clos des Mouches Rouge
A slightly earthier nose reflects ripe and beautifully layered aromas of black cherry, cassis and a plethora of floral nuances, especially violet. The round, delicious and almost tender medium-bodied flavors possess a highly seductive texture before culminating in a youthfully austere, beautifully balanced and hugely long finale. This too could use better depth, but the aging track record of this wine is so good that more will almost certainly develop.
- Burghound, 91-94 Sweet Spot Outstanding
The 2022 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches (Domaine) is shaping up beautifully, revealing aromas of sweet cherries, cassis, licorice and spices deftly framed by toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, with a fleshy core of fruit, succulent acids and powdery tannins, the Drouhin's own fully 14 hectares of this prime premier cru, which is divided equally between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
- William Kelley, 92-94
This is also exuberantly spicy and quite floral as well with its blend of exotic tea, red and dark raspberry, soy and sandalwood scents. The sleek, delicious and solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors possess both a taut muscularity and evident minerality while culminating in a powerful and strikingly long finish. This beautifully balanced effort is a Petits Monts of grace and class.
