2022 Comte Armand Pommard 1er Clos Epeneaux
Since my first visit to Domaine Comte Armand in 1996, Pommard 1er Clos des Epeneaux has held a deeply personal place in not only my cellar but also in my heart - it's a wine I look to buy every year.
Over the years — and through countless visits — I’ve witnessed a succession of gifted vignerons shape and refine this historic domaine, elevating it to its place among Burgundy’s finest.

At approximately 5 hectares, Clos des Epeneaux is among the largest and most privileged monopoles Pommard — composed of roughly 80% Petits Epenots and 20% Grands Epenots, with vines ranging from 18 to over 80 years of age. It remains not only one of Pommard’s crown jewels but unquestionably ranks among the greatest sites in the Côte de Beaune.
The 2022 vintage once again underscores why Clos des Epeneaux commands such reverence. This is a wine of profound structure and density, yet one that manages to reveal its pedigree and inner harmony even in youth.Â

Having tasted just about every vintage since 1985, I can confidently say that under Paul Zinetti’s hand, Clos des Epeneaux has achieved a level of purity and approachability not seen in prior generations — without compromising its aging potential. This is serious juice and deserves a place in any Burgundy cellar. Highly Recommended!Â

"Background hints of wood can be found on the ripe and nicely fresh aromas of poached plum, black cherry and violet. The round, velvety and rich medium weight plus flavors possess fine mid-palate concentration before culminating in a youthfully austere, serious, compact and sneaky long finale. This potentially outstanding effort could use better depth so at least some patience should prove beneficial and 12 to 15 years would be better still."Â

“The 2022 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux ler Cru was tasted from individual cuvĂ©es blended to make a representative final blend is 8% vin de presse. It has a backward nose at first, demanding encouragement from the glass. There's blackberry, raspberry and sea spray, and quite an elevated marine influence compared to recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. Silky smooth in texture with fine delineation, very well-balanced with a touch of white pepper and clove on the finish. This is set to be a generous Clos des Epeneaux, slightly more opulent in style yet with ample freshness and tension. It will require 4-5 years in bottle”Â
