2020 Domaine Michel Lafarge - Rare Large Format Bottles
“It’s a magical wine in the making.”
Offer
There are rare bottles… and then there are SUPER Rare bottles. Today's offer falls into the latter. It's hard enough these days to come up with regular sized bottles of the very best Burgundy wine, nevermind 3.0ltr bottles! In the 30 years I have been selling Burgundy, I don’t remember seeing Jeros from one of my favorite producers, Domaine Michel Lafarge. I don’t know what the production is on these, but guessing it is somewhere less than 10 bottles produced in any given vintage; a total of 10 Jeros for the world!
The press on these wines is nothing less than spectacular. These are some of the finest wines produced period, but add to that, in a truly spectacular vintage. These are trophy bottles in every sense of the word!
“Potentially brillant, very much worth your interest”
“This is jaw droppingly good; indeed it's a veritable 'wow' wine”
2020 Lafarge Volnay 1er Clos Des Chenes 3.0Ltr
The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes wafts from the glass with aromas of cassis, dark berry fruit and plums mingled with notions of warm spices, orange rind, rose petals and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's pure and vibrant, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a long, penetrating finish. It's a magical wine in the making.
- William Kelly, 94-96
Super-fresh aromas are comprised by notes of black cherry, plum and raspberry coulis laced with exotic tea and discreet earth wisps. There is excellent size, weight and intensity to the larger-scaled and more muscular flavors that also possess notably fine-grained tannins on the hugely long and even more complex finale. This is potentially brilliant and very much worth your interest.
- Burghound, 93-96 Don't Miss, Outstanding!
2020 Lafrage Volnay Clos Des Chateau Ducs 3.0Ltr
The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Château des Ducs is liable to overshadow even the emblematic Clos des Chênes this year. Offering up a profound bouquet of blackberries, sweet spices, rose petals, orange rind, summer truffles and forest floor, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and immensely concentrated, with lively acids, abundant but almost imperceptible tannins and a long, saline finish.
- William Kelly, 94-96
This also displays a touch of bourgeon de cassis though it's sufficiently subtle that I doubt it will last. More interesting are the very punchy and beautifully delineated medium-bodied flavors that brim with focused power and minerality on the chalky, moderately austere and hugely long finish. This is jaw droppingly good; indeed it's a veritable 'wow' wine.
- Burghound, 94-96 Don't Miss, Outstanding!
NOTE: from 50+ year old vines; a monopole of the domaine; destemmed manually
2020 Lafarge Volnay 1er Mitans 3.0Ltr
Opening in the glass with aromas of cassis, plums, rose petals and sweet soil tones, the 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Mitans is medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with a concentrated core of fruit, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins, concluding with a perfumed finish.
- William Kelly, 92-94
Once again there is a lovely array of spice elements present on the cool, pure and layered aroma of poached plum, dark berry coulis and violet hints. The vibrant and solidly concentrated flavors possess a succulent mouthfeel thanks to the abundance of sappy dry extract that coat the palate on the balanced, graceful and sneaky long finale. This too is excellent.
- Burghound, 91-94 Sweet Spot Outstanding!
