The 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin (14.5% alcohol) is a voluptuous, opulently-textured, blockbuster with terrific fruit purity, and gorgeous aromas of roasted herbs, kirsch liqueur, blackberries, and Asian spices. The palate impression is one of sweetness because of the wine's high glycerin and ripe, jammy fruit. The chewy, long finish lasts for 40+ seconds. It can be drunk now, but readers should save a bottle for drinking in about a decade. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2018. This is a brilliant effort from one of the Rhone's most accomplished young winemakers. Parker 93
