While it's hard to believe, the nose has become even more elegant with age and has retained its strikingly extravagant panoply of rose petals, oriental spices, pungent tea and leather notes plus ultra refined pinot fruit. The powerful, chiseled, pure flavors are remarkably detailed, precise and fine with mind bending complexity yet for all the emotional drama of this wine, it remains understated and almost aloof at the moment. The finish is dense, structured and still firm though there is nary a hard edge to be found and while this too cannot rival the other worldly 1999 (see herein), 2001 will one day be thought of as a genuinely excellent vintage for La Tâche. In short, aristocratic in every sense. Note that while this is certainly not yet quite ready for prime time, it is approaching the point where it could be opened with pleasure. Multiple and mostly consistent notes. Burghound 96 (2015 Tasting Note)
Shows a lot of the 2001 vintage character when first opened - I'd say somewhat restrained. Bottle was decanted and poured a couple hours later and really started to sing. Classic, refrence point Vosne Romanne nose, rose petal, soy amazing complexity and nauance. La Tache is one of those wines you just want to keep smelling - every time you stick your nose in the glass there is another subtle flavor you pick up. Its truly an amazing wine! Plenty of dense red fruit with beautiful texture balance and lenght. Impressive and classy in every way. While it is still probably another 5 years or so way from prime time drinking it is stil quite enjoyable at the moment. A truly outstanding La Tache that will be fun to enjoy over then next several decades and beyond. Vins Rare 96 (Tasted Dec 2016)
