Champagne Bérêche et Fils
At the heart of the Montagne de Reims, in the village of Ludes, you’ll find one of Champagne’s most compelling grower-led houses, Champagne Bérêche et Fils. This is not a big, faceless brand. It’s a family estate with roots stretching back to 1847, tended today by brothers Raphaël and Vincent Bérêche, the fifth generation to carry the torch. What sets them apart is a deep respect for vineyard individuality and a drive to showcase the full personality of their terroirs.
Raphaël and Vincent divide their roles with a kind of natural ease: one focuses primarily in the cellar, the other in the vineyards. They’ve built their philosophy around meticulous, sustainable vineyard practices, including organic farming and an evolving commitment to biodynamics. In the vineyards, they avoid herbicides and work each parcel on its own terms. Back in the winery, they ferment much of their base wines in oak, avoid filtration, and even use natural corks instead of crown caps for the prise de mousse. These thoughtful choices are designed to coax out texture, nuance and a vivid sense of place in every bottle.
Their NV Brut Réserve is a perfect introduction to their style. It blends roughly equal parts Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, drawing on a mosaic of plots across the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne. A substantial portion comes from the base year, with the balance made up of reserve wines that lend depth and consistency. The result is elegant and lively, with fine bubbles and layered notes of orchard fruit, brioche and chalky minerality that reflect the richness and diversity of the estate’s soils. It is, in many ways, a pure expression of the Bérêche approach: balanced, poised and unfailingly expressive.
