nv-jerome-prevost-la-closerie-les-beguines-lc08
Jerome Prevost Champagne "La Closerie Les Beguines" NV (LC08)
By far one of the most exciting Champange discoveries from our most recent trip. Jerome Prevost owns a small 2.2 hectare old vine vineyard planted to Pinot Meunier which he inherited from his grandmother in 1987. For many years Prevost did what most vineyard owners do - he sold to Negoc. At the urging of is longtime friend and mentor, Anselme Selosse, Prevost started making small quantities of wine in Selosse's cellar starting with 1998. In 2001 he moved the operation into the La Closerie located in Gueux.

Prevost has definitely adopted many of the unique techniques of Anselme Selosse, attention to detail in the vineyards, and like Selosse, extremely low yields (about half the legal limit!), harvesting very ripe fruit with a bio-dynamic approach to farming. The wines spend roughly 18 on lies and then are degorged and finished with 0g/l dosage. They are fresh and nervy wines that will require a few years cellaring to reveal there true magic.

Production chez Prevost is miniscule by Champagne standards. Roughly 10,000 bottles produced. The wines are labeled as NV but in reality all the wines come from a single vintage and from a single vineyard. A marking on the label LC08 indicates that they are from the 2008 vintage - degorged July 2011. Many of you may already know that 2008 is considered one of the finest vintages of the last decade. Having got a chance to taste this wine - it was on my short list of Must have wines. I can't recommend it highly enough. Vins Rare - 94 points

Rating: **(*) Peter Leim Champagne Guide.net
This is rich in body, showing unusually ripe flavors of peach, pear and guava, along with exotic hints of ginger and dry spice. It's noticeably more puissant than the previous two releases were, particularly at this stage, and it expands on the palate with a resonant depth and bold, ample fragrance. This bottle, from the initial disgorgement in October of 2010, was dosed at 2 g/l, and it's still nervy and taut, needing time to gain more harmony and composure. However, it's a potentially outstanding wine, and should prove to be very exciting with a few more years of post-disgorgement age.
