Wine Spectator, August 2008
Very ripe and raisiny, with tar and licorice character that turns to volcanic ash and dried flowers. Full and chewy, yet balanced and polished, with a solid core of fruit and a long, subtle, flavored finish. Best after 2009. 1,500 cases made.  93 points.

Imparato's 2005 Montevetrano is a medium-bodied, somewhat slender version of this wine. It offers a compelling array of crushed flowers, spices, graphite, cracked pepper and jammy blackberries. Today it comes across as less complex than the 2004, but it still very tightly wound and may merit a higher score in the future. Montevetrano is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Aglianico. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020. Proprietor Silvia Imparato originally set out to make wine as a hobby. Her family owned a small property in the hills in the province of Salerno, and in 1985 she grafted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Aglianico on to existing, old rootstocks. With the help of oenologist Riccardo Cotarella she fashioned a modern French-oak aged wine that would ultimately have a profound impact on the wine world by demonstrating the true potential of the wines of Southern Italy. Today, a number of important wines have emerged from the South but to the credit of Imparato and Cotarella, Montevetrano remains among the finest and most distinctive.    93 points.

($105) Medium-deep red. Perfumed cassis aroma complicated by graphite, cedar and mineral notes, plus a not unpleasant hint of bell pepper. Suave and refined on entry, then more spicy and brisk with air, picking up a mineral tang and an enticing floral quality to its cassis and boysenberry flavors. In the style of the vintage, this is a sleeker, smaller-structured Montevetrano in which the youthfully aggressive tannins are almost painful at present and will require a decade of aging-at the least. Finishes clean and impressively long.  90+ points.
