Deep red-ruby. Red cherry, licorice and a peppery nuance on the nose. Less sweet in the mouth and currently dominated by its tannic structure; this is tough going today, but there's excellent underlying fruit and spicy intensity here. -- Vinous/Stephen Tanzer 88+
When I tasted this domaine's wines in mid-November, the Beaune Toussaints had just finished its malo-lactic fermentation (14 months after the harvest!). Produced from vines planted in 1959, it offers a dark ruby color and sweet cherries bathing in mocha on the nose. Its concentrated, medium-to-full-bodied, and gorgeously ripe character is packed with chocolate-covered cherries and black currants. This well-balanced wine's long finish reveals plenty of soft, supple tannins. Projected maturity: 1999-2005. The score, on a range and in parentheses, indicates that the wine was tasted from barrel.
